Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO): Uber from airport ~40 min (KES 1,200–2,000/€9–15). The Nairobi Expressway significantly cuts journey time to Westlands and the CBD. Licensed taxis available — agree fare.

🚇 City Transit

Matatus (minibuses) cover all city routes (KES 30–100/€0.22–0.75) but require local route knowledge. Uber and Bolt are the practical standard for most visitors.

🎟️ Best Pass

No formal passes. Matatu fares per journey. Bolt and Uber are widely used and far simpler for visitors — always safer than hailing unmarked vehicles.

🚖 Rideshare & Taxis

Uber and Bolt both operate extensively and are essential for safe city travel. Little Cab is the local alternative. Always use an app rather than unmarked street taxis.

🚶 Walkability

Westlands, Village Market, and Karen areas are walkable within themselves. Use Uber or Bolt rather than walking unfamiliar streets, especially after dark.

Universal Transport Tips

Applies everywhere on this list — save time and money with these before you land.

📱 Get an eSIM before you land

Airalo and Yesim sell destination-specific data eSIMs that activate the moment you land. Cheaper than airport SIM cards and works across most unlocked smartphones. Set up the app before departure.

💳 Use a no-FX-fee card for transit top-ups

Cards like Wise, Revolut, and Charles Schwab eliminate 2–3% foreign transaction fees on every transit top-up. Pay less every time you tap in — it adds up over a week-long trip.

🗺️ Download offline maps before you need them

Google Maps offline mode covers transit directions in most cities. Alternatively, MAPS.ME works fully offline. Always download your destination's map on Wi-Fi before heading out.

🚖 Always use rideshare apps over hailing taxis

In cities where both exist, app-based rideshare (Uber, Bolt, local equivalents) gives you a metered fare, driver rating, and route tracking. Overcharging and detours are far more common with unlicensed street taxis.

🎟️ Transit passes beat single fares beyond 3 journeys

Almost every city on this list offers a 24h or 48h pass that pays off within 3–4 journeys. If you're sightseeing for a full day, always buy the pass over individual tickets.
